What is slugging?
Slugging: A K-Beauty Trend
The term "slugging" fascinates skincare addicts! What does slugging refer to? How do you practice slugging?
We explain everything about this trend.
Definition of Slugging
Within the K-beauty (Korean-made skincare) movement, slugging has made a viral entry. Slugging consists of applying a thick layer of an occlusive product, such as petroleum jelly, instead of a traditional moisturizer, to trap the active ingredients of a previously applied serum. Petroleum jelly creates a "protective" occlusive barrier on the skin, preventing water evaporation and thus creating a moist environment overnight.
Where does the term Slugging come from?
The term "slugging" comes from the English word "slug," referring to the snail and its slime. When this thick layer of emollient product is applied, it is reminiscent of a technique that involves placing a snail on the face. As it moves, it releases slime, which is said to have benefits for the skin.
After slugging, the face shines and sweats just like a slimy snail. An appetizing trend.
So, is "slugging" really effective?
Is slugging effective?
The promise and goal of slugging
According to those who advocate slugging as part of a night-time skincare routine, it can be effective for certain people, especially those with dry or dehydrated skin. By creating an occlusive barrier on the skin, slugging helps retain moisture and prevent water loss overnight, which can contribute to softer and better-hydrated skin upon waking. It is also said to optimize serum penetration.
The goal of slugging is therefore to achieve soft, well-hydrated, and even plumped skin upon waking.
The reality of slugging
Slugging may not be suitable for everyone but is not considered a dangerous method.
For oily or acne-prone skin, it is not recommended to use the slugging method. Although petroleum jelly is non-comedogenic and non-irritating, slugging may simply be less effective than a classic anti-acne skincare routine with a basic moisturizer. It can also be very uncomfortable for some to have this thick layer on their skin all night long.
The effectiveness of slugging will depend on individual skin reactions and personal preferences. However, it is not recommended to practice this method every night or on the entire face.
The benefits of slugging are currently a trend, but its effectiveness in a daily routine has not yet been scientifically proven. This technique does not deeply hydrate the skin because petroleum jelly is not absorbed by the deeper layers and therefore remains on the surface.
When to practice slugging?
Slugging is a night-time routine as it requires several hours of application.
Where to practice slugging?
Slugging is practiced on the entire face. It is also possible to treat only certain areas. Slugging has also been observed to be practiced on the lips to achieve plumper, more hydrated, and fuller lips.
On the lips, slugging has shown very interesting results when combined with Hyaluronic Acid. Both day and night, lip slugging helps repair damaged and dry lips.
For the hands, slugging is also an interesting technique for people suffering from severe dryness and chapping. The combination of H-filler serum and petroleum jelly yields very satisfactory results.
What are the steps of slugging?
Double cleansing
Before bed, according to the slugging method, it is recommended to thoroughly cleanse the skin. Double cleansing (makeup remover balm followed by a cleansing gel) is the most suitable method for removing impurities and preventing bacteria from being trapped under the occlusive layer. Impurities can lead to bacteria that cause breakouts.
Application of classic serums
Cleansing is followed by the application of classic skincare routine products.
Application of the occlusive layer
Slugging concludes with the application of a layer of petroleum jelly to trap the previously applied active ingredients overnight.
You should plan to change your pillowcase between each slugging session or sleep on a bath towel, as petroleum jelly is greasy and can moisten and stain the area where you rest your head.
Is slugging dangerous?
Creating a moist area on the skin can have consequences, especially if the skin remains moist for long hours or if conditions favorable to bacterial growth are present.
1. Bacterial proliferation: Moisture can promote the growth of bacteria on the skin, which can lead to infections, rashes, or breakouts if the skin is not properly cleaned.
2. Pore obstruction: A moist area caused by a comedogenic product on the skin can potentially clog pores, leading to blackheads, pimples, or acne breakouts.
3. Skin irritation: Excessive moisture can irritate the skin, especially in people with sensitive skin. This can lead to redness, itching, or inflammation.
To avoid these risks, it is important to maintain good skin hygiene, thoroughly dry the skin after cleansing, and not practice slugging every night on the entire face.
Our opinion on slugging
Although low-risk, the slugging method has certain limitations, particularly environmental ones. Petroleum jelly is a petrochemical compound that is not biodegradable.
To ensure skin hydration, there are other more interesting and advanced formulations, such as lipid-replenishing balms.
Lip slugging proves to be a very satisfactory method, provided the correct Hyaluronic Acid serum is used. We recommend using H-filler 3.5% Hyaluronic Acid serum for effective lip slugging.
