What is Ferulic Acid?

Ferulic acid owes its name to a plant, Ferula, an herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family.

Ferulic acid is an organic acid with antioxidant properties beneficial for skin rejuvenation. It is generally found in the cell walls of certain plants such as rice, wheat, or corn.

How Ferulic Acid Works

Ferulic acid helps combat damage from free radicals by acting as a barrier.

Furthermore, ferulic acid acts as an excellent UV filter, providing a high protection factor.

Benefits of Ferulic Acid

Ferulic acid offers numerous benefits for the skin.

On one hand, it strengthens the resistance and longevity of cells against free radical attacks. The action of ferulic acid helps protect the skin from external aggressions, thereby delaying the skin aging process and reducing signs of aging (fading wrinkles, diminishing spots).

On the other hand, ferulic acid has brightening properties. It helps combat hyperpigmentation by blocking melanin formation, which reduces the appearance of pigment spots and revives the skin's radiance.

Finally, ferulic acid is recognized for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, particularly after a post-peel treatment, before hyaluronic acid or Botox injections, or laser procedures. It also helps calm irritation.

Sources of Ferulic Acid

Ferulic acid is generally present in plants. It can be found in the composition of certain cereals, such as corn, rye, and oats.

Ferulic acid is also present in the bark of certain trees (pine, fir) and in some fruits and vegetables (spinach, pineapple, beans), nuts, or coffee.
